Life Insurance Policies – Will You Choose the Right One?

Tuesday, March 28th, 2006

Life Insurance. What does this mean to you?

For some it means security, knowing that their family or business is safe should they unexpectedly pass away. For others it conjures up images of pushy salesmen and confusion about what they are buying.

By learning about the different life insurance policies available you can make an informed decision that will give you peace of mind and satisfaction with your responsible decision.

There are three main types of policies. Here is a brief explanation of what they mean:

Whole Life

Whole life insurance is a permanent insurance. This means that the policy stays in effect for your ‘whole life’ as long as premiums (payments) are up to date.

The cost of whole life insurance premiums will usually be more than the cost of an equivalent amount of term insurance because the cost is averaged. While the cost of term insurance goes up with each renewal, whole life insurance never needs renewing. Instead of paying smaller premiums when you’re young and high premiums as you age, whole life premiums stay the same.

In some policies a savings option can be added which can be used to borrow against.

Universal Life

Universal life insurance is another form of permanent insurance. Like whole life the policy is in effect until you die. You never need to renew the policy (regardless of health) and the premiums will never go up.

Universal life also incorporates other financial services including a savings plan that can be made in addition to the policy. Otherwise the policy can be surrendered in exchange for the savings that have accumulated. Policy owners can often choose from many options including adding another person to the policy, managing their own investments or using the savings to cover the costs of premiums.

Universal life insurance is the most expensive option because of the amount of flexibility and options.

Term

Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance policy option. Term insurance is selected for a certain period of time (term) such as; 1 year, 5 years, 10 years or 20 years.

Term insurance is a good choice for young families with dependants and high debts (such as a mortgage) that they will be no longer be responsible for in 15 to 20 years when the policy ends. Term insurance has no cash value – it cannot be borrowed against or cashed in. If the policy ends and the individual wants to renew the policy the cost of premiums will be higher.

Using term insurance to cover the basic financial requirements of an individual while also instituting a separate savings plan may reduce the need for insurance later in life.

Policy Riders

Depending on the needs of an individual there are other options that can be purchased with certain insurance policies.

The additions to the life insurance policy are called ‘riders’. This includes adding a spouse, including disability income insurance, Accident and Sickness (A&S), Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) as well as customized choices for taking loans or cash payouts on certain policies.

Talk to an insurance broker who will explain the benefits of each feature and recommends only what best suits your needs. With a bit of understanding you can make the most responsible choice with your money and be confident your family or business is provided for.

Online Surveys - Your New Full-time Job

Sunday, January 15th, 2006

Here is the easy way to get rich just by sitting at your computer (in your pajamas nonetheless!) and painlessly filling out surveys! Actually, you will find all that information in the numerous sales letters out there already, so let’s skip to the next step… the step about actually doing the work.

Those claims you may have heard about easy riches are pushing it. You need to realize that most surveys that take 15 minutes will pay two dollars. Even if you work your tail off, that comes out to a paltry $8 an hour.

The first step to success with online surveys is to ask yourself why you are doing this. Is it to pick up some spare cash or are you going to pay the bills with this income? (Making this your full-time job could be dangerous.)

Once you know why you are doing this, get organized. It would be a good idea to set-up a new e-mail address (Yahoo or Gmail for example) dedicated to online survey offers. You’ll also want to turn off any spam filters to ensure that all the survey offers are getting through to you.

Now you need to sign-up for the surveys. Should you pay $35 for one of those directories? Heck no! Most of those are scams. The best way is to simply go to Google and search for “paid survey.” There’s your list and you just saved $35!

When you sign-up for each account, you’ll have to fill out a profile. It’s important to fill this out completely and honestly so that you get notified about compatible surveys. Depending on your circumstances, you could be bombarded with surveys or just find a couple each week.

Here’s the key: Sign-up for as many survey sites as you can find! Don’t expect to get unlimited survey options after signing-up with two or three sites. Again, this is the most crucial step!

Now wait a day or two and see what happens. If you don’t get many offers, you might have to rethink any plans of getting rich by doing this!

Here’s the second most important step. Check your email often! Take the survey as soon as you see it. It’s not uncommon for a survey to fill up within a day. (Remember, there are lots of people out there doing exactly what you are.)

Once you get going, you could easily lose track of what you are doing. The first thing to do is get a PayPal account linked to your survey email address. Some places (like GoZing) will pay by PayPal. Not only is this faster and more convenient than a check, it keeps a record of your earnings in one place.

Another thing is to have a hi-speed internet connection. Quite a few surveys have you watch short videos like movie trailers. Also, use Internet Explorer for your browser. Some survey software is not supported in the Firefox browser.

Now that that is settled, want to make even more money? Try focus groups. These are more personal and involved than the surveys, but the payout is considerably greater.

Well, there’s nothing left but to sign-up, get organized, and take surveys. Good luck!

ESL Teaching - Is it For You?

Would you like to teach English to foreigners in your country or travel to another country to teach? Many young people consider such employment advertisements with great interest since the position offers them the opportunity to travel and often does not require any experience other than being a native English speaker.

Foreign countries looking for English teachers greatly desire the instructor to be a native English speaker. The course materials may be provided or you may be asked to show previous teaching experience or a TEFL or TESL certificate.

Common Terms:

Before you excitedly answer any employment ads you should learn the meaning of commonly used terms as well as recommendations for working locally or abroad.

TEFL: Teaching English Foreign Language; often refers to teaching English in a foreign country. Known to students as EFL classes.

TESL: Teaching English as a Second Language; usually refers to teaching English to foreigners in an English speaking country. Known to students as ESL classes.

Teaching Locally or Abroad?

For people who wish to travel TEFL can be a great opportunity to interact with new cultures and to finance traveling. It is important to investigate the country you will be traveling to as well as the employer offering the position to ensure you will be safe and have reliable work. You may decide to work with an agency based in your home country that will assist you with legal questions and assist you in making living arrangements.

While many foreign positions are available to individuals without experience or certification you will likely find the education and resources of a class to be valuable before taking an assignment. If you think you would like to try this career out you might offer your services locally, as a private tutor, or take an instruction class to familiarize yourself with the responsibilities and work required to teach a language.

If you choose to work in your own country there will be various guidelines for certification, experience and materials as determined by the employers. If you consider private tutoring you can research recommended course materials and methods online or at a book store or library. You can then advertise your services in a local paper or on college and university billboards.

Teaching English can be very rewarding. However, English is a language that is full of rule breaking nuances. Trying to explain these to a student can be difficult and a person needs to have patience and good personal skills to become an effective teacher.

If you would like to review what types of positions are available you can check them out online through employment and ESL teaching sites.
